Wake me up before you go, go...

Hey guys,

Clearly since 9/11, our country has gone to great lengths to increase airport security in an attempt to make us more safe during flights… great, I’m all for that!  I will wait in longer lines, and I will go through all the machines, and take my shoes off… no problem...

Terrorism and mechanical failure are major concerns for airline travelers, but are they the biggest threats to safety in the airline industry?  No way… the number one danger for passengers… pure human stupidity.

Yesterday, two flights landed at Reagan International Airport in Washington D.C.  without clearance from the tower.  Why?  The airport traffic controller was enjoying a nap!  It’s the job of those workers on the ground to ensure that planes do not take off and land at the same time, as well as monitor traffic of flights in the air to avoid collisions.

Last year a flight overshot its destination city of Indianapolis by over 100 miles because the pilots were on FaceBook!!!!

All the scanners, x-ray machines, bomb sniffing dogs, psychics, and air marshals in the world won’t keep us safe from the biggest threat to not only air travel but to humanity… and that is stupidity.

What do you think?

  2. I cant believe this!!!!! This could have resulted in several deaths just because some stupid guy decided to take a nap. He could have killed hundreds of people. You think that with all the airport security and surveillance these days that someone would have realized what the man in the tower was doing. Don't they have higher up people who are paid to watch these workers??? Also, there must have been someone else that was in the tower with this man.

  3. How does somebody fall asleep at an airport??!!...I do not know why. That person should be fired and fined a certain amount of money. Those planes should not have landed if they were to cleared to land. That person who fell asleep could have been some-what responsible for the death of some people. With how strict the airport is today. that is unacceptable.

  4. I agree with Mr. X about airport security. Ten years ago people would be all for a machine that can see an x-ray of your body but now it's violating personal space. If it'll keep me safe, I'm okay with it. These machines aren't here to hurt people.
I can't believe someone would fall asleep at their job, especially this one. Hundreds if not thousands of lives could have been lost because of this person's stupidity. If you didn't get enough sleep, grab a coffee, don't nap while guiding aircrafts onto runways.

  5. I really think that this is completly unacceptable. The people who are working in places as important as the airport should be a little bit more on gaurd. Like Mr. X said we go through massive amounts of security and yet there are people who are supposed to be guiding the planes falling asleep on the job? Its absurd that something like this would happen. I think that the airport needs to look much more closely into the people that they are hiring if nonesence like this continues.

  6. How can someone fall asleep at their job. I seriously think he should be fired because that is a very responsible job. If anything happens then he would be the one to look for. Maybe nothing happened this time but how about if the next time something happens. There shouldnt even be a next time. This guy should definitly get fired. I think that there should be like a supervisor or someone who makes sure they are doing their work instead of sleeping.

  7. What a scary thing to happen. I would be scared enough just being on the plane in the first place, worrying about all the possible things that could go wrong with the people on board or with the plane itself. I would be even more terrified to know that the people in charge of my flight were another thing to worry about. This air traffic controller's nap put many people's lives in danger, and he is lucky that nobody was hurt. I would like to know more of the details behind this story and see what becomes of this mess.

  8. I'll be honest, I laughed when I read this. Not because the controller fell asleep. But that there have been instances of pilots who missed destinations because of Facebook. It just amazes me how stupid some people can be. Isn't the plane on autopilot most of the time? And I'm sure that if cars have GPS, planes can too. And it's not like they just missed it and went back and no one knew the difference. They missed by 100 miles. That may not seem like a lot, but it's the thought that's scary. What if the pilot forgot and fell asleep at the wheel, and the plane ended up over the Atlantic with a fuel tank only filled enough for a Boston to Orlando flight? That is truly scary. But I can't help but wonder; what was his excuse to his superior?
